发明阿司匹林的是1905年的诺贝尔化学奖获得者、德国化学家拜尔（Adolf von Baeyer，1835—1917）。他通过合成的方式制造出了乙酰水杨酸（acide acétylsalicylique）。说到水杨酸，很多人都知道，绣线菊（spirée或spiraea）的主要成分便是这种酸。但是，乙酰水杨酸却并不是从这种植物中提取出来的。于是，德国人就将乙酰水杨酸这种合成酸称为“Aspirin”（并非从绣线菊中提取出来的水杨酸）。其中，“a-”是表示否定的希腊语前缀，“spir”意为“绣线菊”，“-in”是医学和化学领域常用的日耳曼语后缀。
